In fact, you will almost always see the letter "R" on tires as radial tires have been the industry standard for over 40 years. But radial tires represent the vast majority of tires on the road in the United States today. "Bias-ply" tires were used on automobiles and light trucks until the '70s," reports the classic car site, Hemmings. There are two types of construction that you may see on the sidewall of a tire "R" refers to the internal structure of your tire and gives you a general idea of its stability. CONSTRUCTIONĪfter the aspect ratio comes a letter to indicate the tire's construction: P225/70R16 91S. Lower aspect ratio tires, such as a 60 series, generally offer vehicle handling performance advantages over higher aspect ratio tires, such as a 75 series. If a tire has an aspect ratio of 70, it means the tire's height is 70% of its width. Tire makers calculate the aspect ratio by dividing a tire's sidewall height by its width. Aspect ratios are delivered in percentages. ASPECT RATIOĪfter the slash mark, the next number you see is for the tire's aspect ratio, which essentially tells you how tall your tire's profile is: P225/70R16 91S. Thus, a tire with the measurement "P225" is for a passenger vehicle and has a nominal width of 225 millimeters. Tire width always refers to the measurement from one sidewall to another. The first number to appear in your tire size information is the width, in millimeters, of the correct tires for your vehicle: P225/70R16 91S. It's only intended for use on trailer axles. If you see "ST," that means "special trailer." A special trailer tire is never installed on the drive or steer wheels. Similarly, "T" stands for "temporary" and is for your spare tire. Light truck tires are designed to be used on vehicles capable of carrying heavy cargo or pulling trailers. If you see "LT" instead of "P," it's because you need "light truck" tires – "LT" is short for "LT-metric," which is a designation by the Tire and Rim Association for a "light truck" type tire. A "P" signifies the tire was designed to primarily be used on passenger vehicles, which can include cars, minivans, SUV's and other light-duty pickup trucks. The "P" is short for "P-metric," which is a designation by the Tire and Rim Association for a "passenger car" tire type. Let's break down how to read car tire size.įor most vehicles, you'll see the letter "P" before the number sequence begins: P225/70R16 91S. Don't worry if it looks confusing at first - every letter and number has a straightforward meaning. However, no matter where you find your tire size, you will have to decipher a sequence of numbers and letters. You can also find tire size data on the sidewall of your current tires (assuming they're the proper size). The best place to start looking is the owner's manual.ĭon't worry if you can't locate the manual you may also find a tire fit guide in these locations: No matter what vehicle you drive, finding the manufacturer-recommended tire size should be easy. Knowing how to read car tire sizes also means understanding terms like load index and speed rating that affect your vehicle's overall capabilities. While actual, physical measurements like width and diameter are factors in finding the right tire size, there are additional details to consider. These systems are not without their flaws. Unlike forced air systems, they won’t spread allergens around the room and heat evenly, eliminating cold spots.īest of all, these silent systems tend to be between 10 and 30 percent more energy efficient than standard HVAC systems and will continue to keep the house warm for hours after a power outage. Because the heat radiates from the floor itself, there are no vents to place furniture around and the furniture itself can pick up a bit of the warmth. There are quite a few things to love about radiant floor heating systems. At the other end of the system is a dedicated boiler or water heater, with a circulating pump pulling water into the system and returning it to the bottom of the boiler to reheat.Īs the water generally only loses about ten degrees, a running system maintains heat quite efficiently. Heading from the room to the system itself, the manifold helps keep the water evenly distributing between lengths of PEX tubing (see also ‘ Should PEX Piping Be Insulated?‘) and helps vent the system. In most cases, the floor is finished using ceramic floor tiles, as these also hold heat well. These materials hold heat, allowing it to radiate evenly whether the system is running or not. The sub-floor and tubing is covered by concrete, gypcrete, or dry-tamped mortar, providing a solid seal. Each loop of the tube is set approximately nine inches apart, then held in place with specially shaped staples. Uncut lengths snake through the room, with the beginning and end attached to a manifold.īecause the floor will be sealed, there can be no joints in the tubing. Hydronic floor heating takes advantage of the flexibility found in PEX tubing. Related: Indirect Water Heaters: How They Work and Why You’d Want One How Does Hydronic Radiant Floor Heating Work? This provides a cost-effective heating solution that gives a more consistent result than modern forced-air HVAC systems, although it isn’t perfect. The final method, hydronic floor heating, uses the same basic principles of traditional radiator heating. Electric radiant floor heating works well in a small space, but (as you can imagine) becomes prohibitively expensive when used throughout an entire house unless you’re generating most of your power off-the-grid. The second is a more modern solution and uses a series of electric cables installed between the floor and subfloor. While this form of heating may still be found in some historic buildings, it is rarely (if ever) used in modern construction. While the true origin of radiant floor heating is unknown, Primitive Technology proves it was possible with even stone age methods. The original (and largely abandoned in the West) method was used most notably in Turkish baths and consisted of a raised floor to allow hot air underneath, keeping the floor nice and warm. There are three major types of radiant floor heating systems. How Much does Hydronic Radiant Floor Heating Cost?.How Does Hydronic Radiant Floor Heating Work?.What is Hydronic Radiant Floor Heating?. The reality is that the majority of students going out into the market will not be able to use an expensive tool, especially when consulting, so why not invest our time and other people’s time wiser….especially now projects like (SAGE, SciPy, Julia, Octave, Maxima, FreeMAT, Scilab) are much more competitive. In research we’re all too concerned with getting the best result (best in the desired metric of course), but forget the huge economic crutch our faculty-funded blindness creates. Our toolbox is maintained out of habit and out of a frustration with a lack of perceived progress whenever we try to learn a new tool that has little forward benefit in functionality. Education is an investment, every drop of it, and the especially big drops that we lap up in the formative years of our education in undergrad colour the tools we use and desire to use to a large degree. This is a topic that I have continual disagreements with faculty that has the ability to make executive decisions and plan course material. If anyone does find themselves in a situation where they have MATLAB code and no means to run it, then they can always try contacting MathWorks and ask for help in finding a solution. Find a MOOC that comes with free MATLAB – Mathworks make MATLAB available for free for students of some online courses such as the one linked to here. Not bad at all! The extra cost of the toolboxes would still lead me to obsess over how to do things without toolboxes but, to be honest, I think that’s an obsession I’d miss if it weren’t there! Buying all of the same toolboxes as I had before would end up costing me a total of £210+VAT. MATLAB itself for 85 pounds with most of the toolboxes coming in at an extra 25 pounds each. Writing a non-profit blog such as WalkingRandomly counts as a suitable ‘hobby’ activity so I could buy this license. MATLAB Home – This is the full version of MATLAB for hobbyists.Of course once I’ve lost access to MATLAB itself, debugging and adding features will be um……tricky! The whole point of the MATLAB Compiler is to distribute MATLAB applications to those who don’t have a MATLAB license. If all I needed was the ability to run a few MATLAB applications I’d written, I could compile them using the MATLAB Compiler and keep the result. What I’d choose would depend on what I’m trying to achieve but options include Python, Julia and R among others. Rewrite all my code to use something completely different.I could also port some of my Simulink models to Scilab as was done in this link. Scilab – It’s free and it’s MATLAB-like-ish but I’d have to rewrite my code most of the time.Others would require some rewriting and, in some cases, that rewriting could be extensive! There is no Simulink support. Octave – Octave is a pretty good free and open source clone of MATLAB and quite a few of my programs would work without modification.I’ll soon be joining the University of Sheffield who have a MATLAB site license.Go somewhere else that has a MATLAB site license Now, I’ve got nothing! Unfortunately for me, I’ve also got hundreds of scripts, mex files and a few Simulink models that I can no longer run! These are my options: I had a standalone license for MATLAB and several toolboxes – Simulink, Image Processing, Parallel Computing, Statistics and Optimization. For the last 10 years, I’ve used MATLAB at least every week, if not most days. Here, I consider MATLAB – a technical computing environment that has come to dominate my career at Manchester. This article is the second in a series where I’ll look at some of the software that’s become important to me and what my options are on leaving Manchester. As of February 20th, I will no longer be entitled to use any of it! I’ve been working at The University of Manchester for almost a decade and will be leaving at the end of this week! A huge part of my job was to support a major subset of Manchester’s site licensed application software portfolio so naturally I’ve made use of a lot of it over the years. Some of the best firms to work for are also some of the lowest paying firms but they have a culture in place that rewards achievement with more opportunities for achievement. Several employers know this and endeavor to make opportunity part of the compensation package for younger architects the opportunity to take on new challenges and get to do something above their current pay level. Bottom line – it’s not just a job and by extension, not about receiving a paycheck. They plan vacations around buildings and places they want to see, take pilgrimages to these special buildings, buy books endlessly about architecture, etc. Talented architects seem to never take a day off from architecture it’s part of who they are. They do this because it’s what they love to do, at least at some level. Of the people who fall above these numbers, the one trait that almost all of them share is that they are not motivated by the money. I know a lot of people who make considerably more than these figures and I know some people who fall below these levels. The highest 10 percent earned more than $119,220. The lowest 10 percent earned less than $41,320 The middle 50 percent earned between $53,480 and $91,870. Median annual wages of wage-and-salary architects were $70,320 in May 2008. Sounds bad I know, but, I could more than likely go back to any of my previous places of employment and get a job (except for one job that was a 4-month stint that has all disappeared from my permanent record…)Īccording to the United States government Bureau of Labor Statistics – the Occupational Outlook Handbook, the salary range for architects is link updated April 2020): Prior to the one I have now (8 years), I have never stayed anywhere for more than 3 years, most were no longer than 18 months. And surprise – some of the folks I worked with I thought were great and some were terrible. Most of these people have graduated from various architecture programs from around the country but the different abilities and skill sets among these people are as varied as any slice across any other profession. My resume is pretty good and have worked in a lot of different types of practices and have run across a lot of different personality types. I graduated from the University of Texas School of Architecture in 1992 (currently ranked as the #5 Best Architectural undergraduate degree program in the country) with a Bachelor’s Degree in Architecture. Both of these perceptions are irritating to me because it removes some really basic considerations from the criteria one should know in order to provide a qualified answer.ĭo you have a skill set that is in demand?Īre you able to provide more than one basic service with competency? There is also the perception from within the younger members of the architectural community that think architects don’t make enough. There is a perception from the general public (at least those that I run across) that architects make a lot of money. How much money do I make? While I love the store, I’m not sure if I’ll go back. I just wanted to let others know the experience I had there. I don't believe that corporate stopped their discount program. I can’t tell you how disappointed I was in the managers decision not to provide a discount this time. Shop for Hoyo de Monterrey Cigars online at JR for amazing deals and prices. He wouldn’t budge so I regrettably and reluctantly paid full price for the cigars and left the store. The manager came up with some excuse that corporate no longer authorizes discounts and that his hands are tied. Hoyo de Monterrey is the name of two brands of premium cigar, one produced on the island of Cuba for Habanos SA, the Cuban state-owned tobacco company and the other produced in Honduras by General Cigar Company, now a subsidiary of Swedish Match. His manager came over and I told him that every time I come in, he approves a discount because I spend a good deal of money at this store each time I shop. The Epicure Seleccion is a Honduran puro that sports an oily maduro wrapper that has a rich complexity highlighted with notes of pepper and earth. Hoyo de Monterrey is located in one of the fertile lands on the banks of the river that runs through San Juan y Martínez. Once again, I asked about It and the clerk said he would have to get his manager to approve it. The Hoyo de Monterrey Epicure Seleccion is a medium strength cigar that is handmade at the Villazon Cigar factory in Honduras. Today I spent over $305 on cigars and the clerk did not apply any discount nor did he offer it to me. They do a dog and pony show where the clerk calls the manager over and they make a big deal out of it. Corona cigar company has, on most occasions, offered a 10% discount on my total bill, but it's always been a "process" to get the manager to honor the discount. The brand is named after the Basin of Monterrey, which refers to a fertile plantation bought by tobacco grower José Gener in 1860 thats located on a river’s edge in the Vuelta Abajo region of Cuba. I shop there every couple of months to restock my humidor. The words “Hoyo de Monterrey” in the center logo are raised.I frequently shop at corona cigar company in Heathrow and my average spend for cigars is about $250 per visit. The gold, dotted border along the top and bottom of the band is embossed, as is the ornate crown of the center logo. Run your fingers the gold and you will feel it is embossed. Unique, gold scrolling flanks the center logo on both sides. The standard Hoyo de Monterrey band is mainly white, with a brilliant red logo in the center that includes the brand name in white lettering. (One vitola, the Hoyo de Monterrey Palmas Extra, wears a unique red and gold band.) The Corona cigar shape is noted for offering added concentration in a given blend and maintaining a distinct and flavorful approachability. The brand also includes range of thinner ring gauge vitolas called the La Hoyo Series, some of which do not wear a band of any kind. While the exact dimensions of a Corona cigar may vary from one manufacturer to another, many Corona cigars are rolled in the approximate dimensions of 5.25 to 6 inches with a 42 to 44 ring gauge diameter. Double Coronas wear a different band (see below), while Epicures are denoted by their secondary band that reads “Epicure Especial” on them, along with the vitola name. The brand is best known for its Double Corona vitola, as well as the Epicure line extension. In 1865, tobacco grower José Gener registered the Hoyo de Monterrey brand, which is named after the Basin of Monterrey, a fertile plantation near the Vuelta Abajo region of Cuba bought by Gener in 1860. |
